Saabir Sohrab

Honouring the voices, journeys, and contributions
of the Indian Muslim diaspora.

Early Life & Roots

Saabir Sohrab spent his early childhood in Bangalore, a city known for its energy, diversity, and growing technological spirit. Though family relocation would later take him to New Delhi, his roots in Bangalore shaped his outlook—grounded in hard work, curiosity, and an openness to new possibilities.

From an early stage in his career, Saabir gravitated toward technology and entrepreneurship. In New Delhi, he built and ran a computer software development business, carving out his own professional path in a fast-evolving industry. Life was stable, familiar, and predictable. His work was established, his environment understood, and the rhythms of life well known.

Yet, like many who eventually take the immigrant path, Saabir and his family began to imagine a different future—one that would require stepping far beyond the comfort of what they already had.

Foundations in India

Before Canada became home, Saabir had already built an entrepreneurial foundation. Running his own software development business in New Delhi required initiative, persistence, and the willingness to navigate uncertainty—qualities that would later become invaluable in his immigrant journey.

At the same time, family remained central to his aspirations. With two young children and a supportive partner beside him, Saabir began to consider what opportunities might exist beyond India’s borders. The decision to move was not simply about career—it was about creating a future where his children could grow, learn, and thrive.

Leaving behind an established business and a familiar life was not a small step. It meant letting go of stability in exchange for possibility.

The Leap: New Delhi to Toronto

In 2002, at the age of 30, Saabir arrived in Toronto with his wife and their two young children.

Like many immigrant families, they stepped into a new country without the safety net of relatives, friends, or professional contacts waiting to receive them. The early days were filled with the quiet but powerful emotions that accompany such a transition—the uncertainty of the unknown, the absence of familiar faces, and the realization that everything would have to be rebuilt from the ground up.

The comforts that once felt ordinary—extended family, cultural familiarity, professional networks—were suddenly far away.

For many newcomers, these first moments in a new country are both hopeful and daunting. Every decision carries weight. Every step forward requires courage.

Saabir knew that waiting for opportunity was not an option. Within just a month of arriving in Toronto, he registered a sole proprietorship in software development. Without contacts or established networks, he began reaching out, introducing himself, seeking projects, and slowly trying to re-establish his footing in a completely new professional landscape.

Those early days required patience and resilience. The first breakthrough did not come overnight, but when it did, it marked the beginning of something important—the realization that it was possible to rebuild.

Rebuilding a Life & A New Chapter

Over time, Saabir gradually rebuilt his professional life in Canada. Through persistence and steady effort, his work in software development began to take shape again, allowing the family to establish stability in their new home. But the story of rebuilding was not his alone.

His wife embarked on her own remarkable journey of reinvention. Returning to university while raising their children, she transitioned her career from technology into healthcare. Years of dedication and study eventually led her to complete a master’s degree and graduate as a Nurse Practitioner—a powerful example of determination and growth.

Together, they navigated the challenges familiar to many immigrant families: raising children in a new country, balancing education and careers, and building a sense of belonging in unfamiliar surroundings.

Alongside his work in technology, Saabir also explored real estate investment, gradually building a modest portfolio of rental properties over the years—another step toward creating long-term stability for the family.

Today, the results of those years of perseverance are reflected in the paths their children have chosen. Their son now serves as a Nurse Practitioner in a rural community, while their daughter is a teacher with the Toronto District School Board and continues to pursue higher education.

In recent years, Saabir has entered a different stage of life. Having stepped away from the pace of full-time work, he now spends more time in nature and community activities. As a volunteer hike leader, he guides others through trails and forests, helping people reconnect with the outdoors and discover the simple joy of walking through nature.

He still takes on software development projects from time to time, but at a rhythm that allows space for reflection, family, and the experiences that once had to wait while a new life was being built.

Looking back, the journey from New Delhi to building a life in Toronto has been defined by perseverance, partnership, and quiet determination. What began with uncertainty in a new country gradually transformed into a life of stability, purpose, and opportunity.

Today, as Saabir watches his children build their own meaningful paths and reflects on the years of effort that shaped their family’s journey, there is a deep sense of fulfillment. The unfamiliar land that once felt distant has long since become home—proof that with patience, resilience, and the support of family, even the most uncertain beginnings can grow into a life well built.
